General donations

Unless a donor selects a specific restricted campaign or the Foundation agrees to a restriction in writing, a donation is unrestricted. Unrestricted donations may be used where most needed to advance the Foundation’s charitable mission, including research, publications, conferences, other mission-related programs, contractors supporting that work and reasonable operating expenses such as technology, regulatory filings and software.

Unless stated at the point of donation, no goods or services are provided in exchange for a donation.

Donations to a specific program

The Foundation treats donations made through the following program-specific website forms as restricted to the named program:

• Journal of Special Jurisdictions: used only for the Journal and related publication work.
• Startup Societies Network Café: used only for the Network Café program.
• Startup Societies Board Game: used only for the Board Game project.

A donation through the Board Game form does not include a game, preorder, product, service or other item in exchange. It is separate from a purchase through the website shop.

If a restricted project is completed, discontinued, fully funded or becomes impracticable, remaining funds may be used for the closest related charitable purpose consistent with donor intent and applicable law. Where required, the Foundation will seek donor consent or other appropriate authorization before redirecting restricted funds.

Donation refunds and payment errors

Donations are generally nonrefundable. The Foundation may issue a refund for a duplicate charge, processing error or suspected fraud. Requests must be sent to joe@startupsocieties.com within 30 days of the transaction and should include enough information to identify the payment. Approval depends on the payment record, applicable law and processor rules.

Shop purchases

Startup Societies Foundation is the seller for purchases made through the website shop. Shop proceeds support the Foundation’s charitable mission and necessary operating expenses.

• Unused items in their original condition may be returned within 30 days of delivery.
• The customer pays return shipping unless the item was defective or the wrong item was sent.
• Original shipping charges are nonrefundable.
• An order may be cancelled before fulfillment. After fulfillment begins, the return policy applies.

To request a return or cancellation, email joe@startupsocieties.com with the order details before sending an item back.

Receipts and tax treatment

The Foundation provides the transaction record or acknowledgment generated for a donation. Deductibility depends on the donor’s circumstances and applicable law. Donors should consult their own tax advisers; the Foundation does not provide personal tax advice. Purchases are separate from donations and are described and receipted separately.

Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency donation options are not currently offered on the website. Any future wallet address will be published only after independent two-person verification.
