🚀 What is Startup Societies Boardgame?

  • In Startup Societies, each player becomes a global entrepreneur aiming to found, expand, and consolidate the highest number and value of Startup Societies around the world, and even beyond, reaching outer space.

Value is measured in cash, property value, and residents (which can include e-residents, residents are the equivalent of clients).

The goal is to accumulate the greatest total economic value by the end of the game, combining:

  • The value of founded societies
  • Investments in infrastructure
  • Remaining cash on hand

The player with the highest total economic value will be declared the most successful entrepreneur in the world of Startup Societies.

  • Each player selects a colored token and an entrepenour card:
  • Shuffle the Situations and Allies/Enemies decks and place them face down
  • All Startup Societies cards are placed in their designated spaces on the board
  • Randomly select the starting player and order of play.
  • In the order of start, players choose their own character to start.

1. Each turn:
  • Roll 2 dices on the board and sum both numbers.
  • Move forward the total number of spaces along the path on the map.
  • Perform the action associated with the space you land on.
2. Types of Spaces you can land on and Actions
  • 🔷 Startup Society (Territory)
Buy it if available; if already owned, pay rent.
  • 📜 Event
Positive or negative event for the player. May trigger a Crisis that affects all players for a limited time.
  • 🤝Ally/ 💥Enemy
Draw an Ally or Enemy card (buff or debuff). Some are permanent, others are single-use.
  • 🏛️Zone Authority Actions
Upgrade infrastructure in your own Startup Society and/or buy protection.
  • 🛡️Insurance
    Purchase protection.
3. Founding and Upgrading Startup Societies
  • Buying a Startup Society:
You can purchase the society when lading on the individual space and if it’s available. Its price is shown in BTC (ranging from 6 to 25 BTC depending on the Startup Society).
  • Upgrading Infrastructure:
You can only upgrade when landing on an Investment & Protection Center.
    • Upgrade Cost
    • You can only upgrade one level per turn.
    • You cannot stack multiple upgrades in a single move.
    • Each level is represented by unique plastic tokens, thematically designed according to the type of Startup Society.
4. Rent and Income

Income:
Each time you complete a full lap around the board, you earn income from all your societies that are at least at Level 1 infrastructure.

Rent:
If a player lands on a society owned by another player, they must pay rent based on that society’s infrastructure level.

5. Insurance cards

You can purchase insurance against the next negative event or player moves at an Investment & Protection Center.

6. Situation, Ally, and Enemy Cards
  • Situations:
Events that can affect one or multiple players.
Examples: Economic crises, technological breakthroughs, regulatory changes.
Allies:

Provide positive buffs.

  • Can be temporary (last 2–3 turns) or permanent (until replaced)
Enemies:

Apply negative debuffs.

    • May hinder expansion, reduce income, or impose extra costs.

⚠️ Key Rule:
You may only have one active permanent buff at a time.
If you draw a new Ally or Enemy card, your previous permanent buff is automatically lost. Temporary buffs can be stacked.

7. Types of Startup Societies and Benefits

🌊 Aquatic (e.g., Seastead, SeaZone, Floating City)
🖥️ Digital (e.g., Metaverse City, DAO, Network State, Blockchain)

  • Only one active type can be used at a time.
  • Switching the active type costs 5 BTC.

Co-Ownership When Upgrading Infrastructure
Clear Rule:
Co-ownership is only possible when two players agree to upgrade a Startup Society together.

Both must pay half of the upgrade cost.

From that moment:

  • Rent is split between both.
  • Income per lap is also split.
  • Future upgrades must be mutually agreed upon.
  • If one player wants to leave the co-ownership, they must sell their share (either at an agreed price or half the original value).
8. Maintenance Cost

Each time you complete a full lap around the board, you must pay a maintenance fee for each upgraded society:

9. End of the Game

The game ends when:

  • All territories have been founded, or
  • 20 rounds are completed (20 turns per player)
Final Scoring: Add together:
  • Purchase value of all owned societies
  • Value added from infrastructure upgrades
  • Remaining cash🧮 The player with the highest total economic value wins the game.

🧮 The player with the highest total economic value wins the game.
